Ruskin Bond, born in 1934 in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh, wrote his first novel, The Room on the Roof, at the age of seventeen in 1951. This book brought him the prestigious John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize in 1957. From childhood, Bond had the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of picturesque places like Mussoorie, Dehradun, and Shimla. Perhaps this is why The Room on the Roof beautifully captures the scenic beauty of Dehradun and its surrounding areas.
Written by a teenager about adolescence, the novel portrays the genuine emotions and experiences of Rusty, Kishen, Somi, and Ranbir. It delves into Rusty’s joys and sorrows, his moments of celebration and grief. It also explores his true feelings of love for Meena, an older woman. Meena’s death leaves Rusty in profound sorrow. Though he leaves to escape his pain, Rusty eventually returns to the little room on the roof, as it was the only place he could truly call his own.
