Dhubri, a small town located to the west of Guwahati, suddenly rose to fame across Assam during 1970-71. This was due to a series of weekly investigative reports published in Assam’s popular weekly newspaper Asom Bani. These reports were authored by the renowned writer Nirode Chaudhury. Chaudhury delved into the brutal murder committed by Upendra Rajkhowa, a retired session judge, who went into hiding for six months after carrying out the crime. Through his investigative articles, Chaudhury brought the case to light for the public. In the 150-year history of Assamese journalism, this marked the first instance of investigative journalism. References to Nirode Chaudhury and his groundbreaking investigative work can even be found in the court’s final judgment of the case.
